Week 7 Notes and Ideas
29 Jun 2010 Leave a Comment
From week 7 I learned:
* How to work with multimedia storytelling and use audio and video when storytelling.
* That a public relations professional should contact interested reporters who were unable to attend a news conference.
* In public relations, press tours are also called junkets. All-expense-paid junkets are NOT an effective way to guarantee a well written, positive story.
* A Web page with a strong marketing emphasis may have several main sections, including: a section about the organization and its reputation for service and reliability.
*Navigation tools are a priority on a Web site.
PRCA3330-5 Steps to MultiMedia Storytelling-Week 7
29 Jun 2010 Leave a Comment
This week we took the 5 Steps to Multimedia Storytelling. While taking it I learned the best way to choose a story, how to make a storyboard, how to report with multimedia, how to edit for the web, and how to produce the story. It was very interesting and taught me a lot.
Now I am able to: Identify the elements in a multimedia story, understand which stories are more suitable for multimedia, sketch a concept for a story, and identify tools needed to gather content in the field. I never knew that all this was needed in order to make sure a good multimedia story. It was actually a lot harder than I expected it to be.
Like I just said, what surprised me was how hard it actually was and how much was to go into it. I did not think that it would be that complicating. It was need how to learn how to do all the audio and how much it actually helped the story once you figured out how to do it. It added so much more and so much more depth to what you are trying to get out to your audience. I would like to know more about this subject and more on exactly what to do in further depth. I would also like for someone to explain it to me instead of me having to do it by myself because I think that I would better understand it to have someone explain it to me instead of having to read it.
I really liked this exercise and thought it was extremely interesting. It fascinated me how much you can really add to writing by using video and audio to help spice up what you are trying to replay to your audience! Writing can be exciting if you try!!

Amy, you are such a little Twitter lover! ha. I knew that when we got this assignment that you would love it! But, I agree with you, I learned a lot more about Twitter than when I usually use it to just stalk celebrities or see what some of my friends are up to. I couldn’t believe that PR professionals and PR companies really use Twitter as much as they do until Dr. Nixon made it mandatory for us to follow them, which I think was a great idea! Like you, I learned that people talk about more things than just what they are doing at the moment. It can be actually be a great learning experience to learn about things going on around the world and in the PR world!

This article on 6 ways on how to pitch social media to your boss really caught my eye. The 6 ways were: Get help from other colleagues, Schedule a time for the pitch, Create a formal presentation, Primarily, answer the question “What problems will social media solve?, Present the benefits of using social media from different company perspectives, and Recommend a concrete plan of action.
This was in 2008 when the author of this article pitched this to his companys CEO. He came up with them while doing his powerpoint presentation. His boss let him do some experimenting after and designed things on Twitter, blogs, and other social media things to help people learn on how to pitch social media to their companies or bosses.
I thought it was an extremely interesting article and something that each of us can learn from in case we are put in a situation in the future to where we need to help our company climb up the ladder and be the best that it can be.

I don’t really know how I feel about this article about “celebrities getting iphones without waiting in lines.” I understand that they are celebrities and can basically do what they want. But, is that really the fair way to go about things? I think that it should be equal and first come first serve. No need to make others mad who have been standing in line for hours and you cutting and the people who work at the store letting you cut just because you’re a celebrity.
I think that maybe celebrities should start understanding that they are regular people too and they can’t just always get what that want on a silver platter. I think that this should be taken care of and not let it happen again with other people that are supposively “higher up” than the rest of us!
Week 6 Notes and Ideas

From week 6 I learned:
* About writing for radio and television from CH 9
* I also learned how to write VNRS and PSAS
* From CH 10 I learned how to distribute news to the media
* For example, tip sheets, e-mail, photo placement firms, and fax.
* We also took a NewsU course and I learned how to “write for the ear” such as audio and things dealing with social media that should be heard unstead of written.
PRCA3330-Podcasts-Week 6

The podcast that I decided to listen to was Inside PR. The people talking were Martin, Gina and Joe. I thought it was very interesting that they were all communicating but not in the same place, they were all over the world!
They talked about a conference that Martin and Joe went to and they were telling Gina how they met many “great communicators” and look forward to doing something like that again in the future. At the conference they talked about social media trends and how wherever they were they couldn’t believe how flat the ground and terrain was. They were so funny to listen to! Martin kept telling them how he would get up early because his Blackberry was messed up and be about 2 hours early for his conference and he became very tired towards the end of the day! Everything that they would say they would connect it to social media and made it extremely interesting to listen to.
They even actually talked about Twitter (which we worked with last week) and Facebook which I think everyone nowadays is very into. Joe interviewed with someone that was launching a book and he explained and helped him with social media to get his name out there and promote awareness of his novel. After that the author of the book, Terry, got on and talked about how he used social media in order to get his book selling. It made me realize that social media means everything and can help you in many ways after listening to this podcast!
Listening to PR podcasts can benefit PR students or new PR practitioners because you can actually lsiten to what PR people are doing around the world and can learn many tips and ideas on how to better your career and future with PR. Usually people like things that are audio so you can listen to it on the road or while exercising. I found podcasts to actually be very entertaining and helpful, something that I was not expecting. I encourage PR professionals and students to listen to podcasts because I believe them to be very beneficial!

I thought that chapter 6 was extremely helpful. I thought that it had many tips and ideas that will definitely help us in the future for the professional world. Preparing fact sheets, advisories and all the others that you mentioned are very important for PR professionals and something that we always need to know and be good at in order to be on our a-game. I did not even know about the 7 components dealing with media kits until chapter 6 and I thought that it was so helpful and useful. And the tips on how to make a perfect pitch are so useful and something that I think we need to know like the back of our hand.

I really like this post! Personally, I am very excited that the Lakers won! I love Kobe! But I also think that the games that them and the Celtics played were excellent and they are both fantastic and very talented teams. I also really like your picture that you put up and it really adds to your blog. I read some comments about the players and was also wondering how their PR people handled it. I understand that it must be hard to back up your clients and keep them and their fans happy. But overall it was great games and I think that both teams acted respectable and played to the best of their abilities!

I feel the same way that you do about this! When I saw that we were required to blog, I was thinking “what is the point of this?” I didn’t think that people really did this for fun or like I just read from your post that they got paid! That is really unreal and I can’t believe that people get paid to write a blog post.
You can learn so much from reading people’s and companies blogs and really find out what is going on in the PR world. I learned that it can also help your companies business and really get the word out there about the success that you are trying to have. It’s really crazy that there are so many social media things out there that can really help your business and help you learn so much about anything and everything.
